237: The Wild Episode

What’s WILD to me is that these two women who NEVER miss an episode of this podcast AND their daily podcast, The Daily Happy, also have the time to have BIG jobs!

Lulu will be making her Broadway debut in 1776 at the American Airlines Theatre in NYC in September 2022 and Alison is currently directing, Nunsense: A-Men w/Matt McGee (this week’s episode’s giver of the Magic Word) playing Mother Superior. From one RevMo to another, Matt…Merde! and carry that clicker, sister!

If you know our Lulu, you know she’s an avid Star Trek fan, so she’s loving being able to enjoy Star Trek Discovery on Paramount Plus.

Alison has two obsessions this week. One is a TV show she enjoys on Hulu, called The Bear.

Her other obsession is a birthday gift from one of her daughter’s friends, this handy dandy Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag is her new obsession! The only task is for her to keep that white bag clean!

Lulu wishes that basic nutrition was free. If foraging is your method, it can be, but is takes a lot of time to research what you can forage to get all the necessary nutrition and not poison yourself.

If you want a fun and informative forager to follow on TikTok, follow Alexis Nikole. She’s hilarious, enthusiastic and shares some really cool info and recipes!

Alison seems to be collecting all kinds of multi-vitamins, but just can’t seem to get herself on a consistent schedule. Personally, I have to use a pill box that I fill on Sundays and then part of my morning routine is to have my vitamins with some fresh juice. Most of the time it works, but it wavers when I travel. So, I feel ya!

Inspired by Matt McGee’s magic word of WILD, Lulu went to Białowieża, Poland to enjoy the primeval forest of Białowieża. She enjoyed a stay at the Siolo Budy Airbnb, a charming house that sleeps 10 and offers hammocks, and a barn with table tennis. One of the big draws to the forest is the Wild Bison. Of course, if you’ve seen the number of gorings here in the US West, you’d understand why Lulu chose to bring a guide. And guess who that is?? Yup, VLAD, our favorite 10K imaginary all-purpose guide, driver, etc.

She treated him to a lunch at Gosporo Pod Źubrem to soak up the local flair and enjoy some local delicacies. And since it’s just fun to do on a 10K day…she ate lunch and dinner back to back! Why not, right? Dinner was at Stoczek 1929 for some locally sourced, organic & seasonal fine dining of a multi-cultural cuisine (Belarusian, Lithuanian, Ukrainian, Jewish, Polish and Russian)

Who knew there was such a thing as Żubrówka Bison Grass Vodka!? It even has a blade of bison grass in the bottle! Well, Lulu found it there and Żubrówka ranks as the third or fourth best-selling vodka brand in the world! This vodka is usually served on its own, chilled. But, you can mix it with apple juice and it becomes a Polish drink called, tatanka (I remember that from Dances with Wolves) or szarlotka (Polish for "apple cake") or it is known in the UK as a Frisky Bison and in the US as a Polish Kiss. So, in order to try one of these, Lulu purchased an Oranfresh apple juice vending machine to make her own.

What WILD things were in store for Alison in Deer Valley, Utah? She started her stay at the Stein Eriksen Lodge (pay no attention to Alison calling it the Stein Eriksen Lodger…I’m pretty sure we could put any script with autocorrect mistakes in front of her and it would come out comedy gold!) They say, “The luxurious 170-room offers ski-in, ski-out access to Deer Valley Resort, and has a western design style that could be described as "wilderness chic." Rooms are spacious with ranch-like decor (picture tribal patterns, paintings of horses and high-beamed ceilings), comfortable bedding, and clean bathrooms. Besides the highly reputed spa, the two restaurants (make sure to try the Stein burger) and year-round outdoor pool with a large fireplace add to the lodge's popularity.” It was voted United States Best Ski Hotel by the World Ski Awards. She opted for the luxury one bedroom with a hot tub.

Breakfast was at the Snow Park Restaurant at a nearby lodge which has an incredible breakfast buffet with freshly baked pastries, house-made granola w/low-fat yogurt, Irish oatmeal with a drizzle of Vermont maple syrup, huevos rancheros or an omelet filled with house-smoked salmon and even more made-to-order entrees.

Then it was off to the Boulder Mountain Ranch for some wild-west style horse-back riding where she looked the part in her Victorian Polonaise dress from Etsy decked out with some super ‘cher’ Duncan Quinn Riding Boots. And if you really want a treat, go listen to Alison and Lulu trying to decide which time in the Wild West she would look like in the dress. (Vintage Wild West dress- Etsy)

Following her ride, she went on a Chair Lift Ride and enjoyed her Gourmet Picnic Bag for a meal that I, personally, would eat up like a hoover! See if this doesn’t get your saliva glands working!

Maple rubbed Cedar Plank Salmon

Crispy Brussel Sprout Salad

Oven Roasted Baby Beets with Goat Cheese

Fingerling Potato Salad w/mustard, bacon, celery, scallion

Deer Valley Carrot Cake

Now, to work off all that lovely food was her next activity, a mountain biking Twilight Ride. So, she needed some specialized Trek Bike Shoes to pedal her evening away before landing back at the lodge(r) for an expensive and yummy meal.

Once you’re used to the rhythm of your role in a show, you can develop little routines or even treats for yourself. Since there is one number close to the end of the show that Lulu is not in, she treats herself to a little bit of ice cream before she does her final scenes in the show. Tasty treats!

Alison treated herself to her favorite gas station food and that’s Little Debbie’s chocolate donuts. Gotta treat yourself when you’re working so hard!
